Cryogenics
Hi,
This is the first post for my newest blog about transhumanism and what I believe to be the future of humanity. In this blog I will be covering the latest discoveries, scientific theories, genetic mutations and transhumanist movements that happen and how this will affect the world as we know it. I will attempt to not give any personal remarks on whether I think this is good or bad as I wish to simply inform.
The first topic I wish to cover is the idea of cryogenics. As some of you may know many people have frozen their bodies mostly due to suffering from a currently incurable disease in the hopes that someday they could be thawed and cured. However at least for now I see this to be a dead end. The reason for this is the fact that we currently don't know enough about the brain and human body to believe that if somehow someone is revived, then they will retain all their memories and consciousness.
Do I eventually believe that this might be possible. Yes, and this is simply due to how fast technology is advancing. As Ray Kurweil said, 2045 might be the year of the singularity (more in another post) and if this is true then it might certainly be possible for cryogenics to work.
Another reason for this maybe being possible is the idea of cryogenics becoming more mainstream. Already many movies (passengers) and games (fallout 4) have the idea of cryogenics in them and therefore as the public gets more exposed to this idea, more and more people will think about giving it their support which will greatly push this technology further
The science behind cryogenics is quite interesting though, as the idea is to freeze the body and preserve it. What most people don't understand is just how complicated this is. For example a fluid is used to prevent the cells from exploding. Many such problems also leads me to believe that cryogenics won't be a reliable source of longevity anytime soon.
In conclusion while I see cryogenics to be interesting and maybe someday useful. However due to the lack of current progress and the many problems and uncertainties associated with the process of cryogenically freezing, I would advice people to wait before attempting to achieve this form of immortality.
Not gonna lie though, the idea of cryogenics is kinda creepy when you think about it. Imagine the picture below being a human person.......creepy right, anyway
